Lincoln was criticized for his easy going, calm personality along with his view on slavery. Contrary to popular opinion, Lincoln wasn't an abolitionsist, but only an anti-expansionist. He was quoted saying that he would rather not free one slave if were to save the division of the Union in the United States. He wasn't opposed initially to pre-existing slavery, but only to its spread into the newly aquired Western territories acquired during the Mexican American War. After rejecting the Crittenden Compromise of 1860, hopes of reconcilliation were lost and Lincoln's main 'flaw" in the eyes of the southerners, especially those who owned plantations was that he had an "undue love for the black race" and most of the cartoons that display Lincoln show him as a careless and incompetent individual who has no understanding of the inner workings of the United States' infrastructure, mainly suggesting that he was either ignorant to or completely ignoring the fact that slavery played such a major role in the southern, agriculturally based economy which translated into the north's need for further extent of industrialization to process commodities like cotton and corn.
Lincoln wasn't at all treated fairly. In the United States, he is responsible for the legislation that liberated the slaves-ending the most socially degredating institution to ever be present in a "free country." He is known today by many as the greatest president in the United States not only due to the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation, but because he led the Union through several generals to a victory, he also succeeded in ensuring the survival of the United States despite the fact that it took several years of force and great monetary expenditures to do so.
The cartoons that were drawn during the Lincoln time period are much less physically demeaning and much more conservative as far as caricature goes with these sketches. Cartoos today display candidates/people with enhanced features that are demeaning in several ways and full of subliminal messaging as opposed to the nineteenth century cartoons that tend to show things more accurately for each side.
